How to configure your PC to view Malayalam Text

In Windows-XP

  1. System Configuration

    1. Go to "Control Panel" and then click "Regional Language Options"
    2. Click on "Languages" tab and check on the box which says "Install Files for complex scripts".
    3. This method will ask for Win XP CD. Put the CD in the CD drive and let the installation begin.
    4. Once the installation is complete, reboot the system if required.
  2. Download & Install Suitable Font
    1. Click on AnjaliOldLipi and save that file into your computer(This is the most apropriate font which can display almost all letters correctly) to download the font and save it.
    2. Locate your Windows installation directory (Usually it is "C:\Windows").
    3. Copy the above downloaded font-file and paste it in to "Fonts" directory under your "Windows" directory.

  3. Browser Configuration

    1. Internet Explorer.
      1. To specify preferred language:
        1. Select in browser menu: Tools > Internet Options. This opens the Internet Options window.
        2. Click on the "Languages..." button. This opens the Language Preference window.
        3. Click on the "Add..." button.
        4. Choose language Malayalam(ml) from drop-down list and click "OK".
        5. Click "OK" in the Language Preference window, and then in the Internet Options window to return to your browser.
      2. To specify the fonts used for each language:
        1. Select in browser menu: Tools > Internet Options. This opens the Internet Options window.
        2. Click on the "Fonts..." button. This opens the Fonts window.
        3. Select the language you wish to modify in the drop-down menu (here, Malayalam).
        4. In the two lower windows, select the font AnjaliOldLipi you wish to use for Web browsing ("Web Page Font")
        5. Click "OK" in the Fonts window, then in the Internet Options window to return to your browser.
    2. FireFox
      1. To specify preferred languages:
        1. Select in the browser menu: Tools > Options... This opens the Options window and then select Content.
        2. Select Advanced from Fonts & Colors and this will open Fonts Window
        3. Select Malayalam from the Fonts for list.
        4. Choose Proportional as sans-serif
        5. Choose Serif as AnjaliOldLipi , Sans-serif as Times New Roman
        6. Select Default Character Encoding from Character Encoding as Unicode(utf-8)
        7. Click OK to apply the selections.
